My Entrepreneurship Story

I have been surrounded with entrepreneurship for all of my life, my mom started a printing company when she was 25 and my dad owned his own contracting business. Unfortunately my dad's contracting business went under, my mom sold the printing company and we moved to Florida. My parents then started a web design/marketing company together. They both work from home and have flexible schedules to spend time with me and my brother, which not all parents with regular jobs can do. Even though they can make their own schedules they work such long hours and stress about the business constantly. After seeing both sides of the entrepreneurship industry I personally do not want to own my own business, seeing how much my parents stress and how hard they work, but it is what they want to do and they love it. In my mom's free time she makes sea glass jewelry and sells it at markets and online, now that is the kind of business I can handle. My mom only makes the jewelry in her free time when it is convenient. She loves collecting sea glass and making the jewelry and it makes her some extra money!!

I am taking this class because I want to go into the business/finance field. I was searching for electives to take to give me some more credits but I did not want to take some random, easy elective with a subject I did not care about. Entrepreneurship actually interests me, and so far I am loving this class! The assignments actually mean something, it is not just reading a textbook and learning definitions. I feel like the skills and tips you learn in this subject can be applied to just about anything.

  1. Thanks for sharing this interesting entrepreneurship story. This is a well written in depth answer to the assignment question. I definitely agree with you that owning your own business leads to long and stressful days at times.

  2. Corla,

I believe you when you say that your parents can work the hours they want to, but are constantly consumed by their business. My dad started his own company as well and he is constantly working late on weekdays and on weekends just to keep up with the workload. However, I think my dad and your parents can agree that they all have a passion for the business they created despite having to work long hours.

  3. Hi Corla,

your family's story is really inspiring and I hope I can one day be a successful business person as well. I also needed an extra elective, and was told ENT3003 could be the perfect fit. We're going to learn a lot of valuable skills, that will apply way past graduation and into the future! Looking forward to a successful semester!

  4. Corla, I found your entrepreneurship story very relatable. Like your parents, my dad lost his job, and then started his own business. Because he works from home as well, I can easily relate to the stress that comes with running your own business, and that to, has made me reconsider a career in entrepreneurship. Great job telling your story on this post.
